HOLIDAYS & FESTIVAL | JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2011

Thailand has a large number of festivals and holidays. Exact dates for festivals may vary from year to year, either because of the lunar calendar, which is not synchronized with the solar calendar, or because local authorities decide to change the festival dates. The Tourism Authority of Thailand publishes an up-to-date major Events and Festivals Calendar each year. The following are just a few major holidays and festivals in Thailand.

January

New Year's Day (1st January) - public holiday

February

Magha Puja Day (12th - 18th February, full moon, third lunar month)

A public holiday commemorating the gathering of the Lord Buddha’s disciples that culminates with a candlelit walk around the main chapel of every temple across the country.

Underwater wedding in Trang (14th February)

Getting married in February? Fancy a wedding with difference? Every year the province of Trang plays host to the only underwater wedding in Thailand come Valentine's Day.

Chinese New Year (late January to early February)

A week of festivities and fireworks displays in the Chinese neighborhoods throughout Thailand.
